As Tuesday dawned inhabitants of the planet's dirtiest urban center encountered exposed to severely hazardous air that registered in the "alarming" level.
Various sections of the capital registered an pollution measurement above 500, which translates to 10x the healthy threshold established by the WHO.
In some locations, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of eighteen hundred, equating to fifteen to twenty times exceeding acceptable limits.
Since 2020, the government had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of pyrotechnics during the Festival of Lights due to their major role to the dangerous pollution that blankets the city as winter sets in.
Yet earlier this year, the recently formed local government appealed to the supreme court to request a relaxation of the prohibition.
Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously doubted by environmentalists as being only approximately one-third lower impact – as a middle ground between "heritage and ecological concerns".
Despite concerns of medical and ecological activists, judges approved the request, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be set off during specific periods throughout the Diwali.
Throughout the festival evening, there was widespread violation of the designated hours across the capital, with little enforcement regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the supposedly greener type.
Many recording stations throughout the city registered contamination peaking around the night hours to extremely hazardous levels seen during celebrations in at least the past three years.
The widespread use of pyrotechnics during Diwali also sparked a blame game with adjacent Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistani the Punjab region partly blaming worsening atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on contaminants coming from India following the events.
Alarmingly severe readings of atmospheric toxins in Delhi have persisted as a major challenge for over a decade and a half, with the problem continuing to worsen.
Around Diwali, the levels of toxic airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been found to spike to seventy percent above the worst levels ever measured in Beijing, which was once regarded as the planet's dirtiest urban center.
The situation in Delhi is caused by a combination of different contributors including transportation pollution, airborne particles, development work, waste incineration and haze from crop residue ignition in nearby states of neighboring agricultural zones.
Within these states, farmers routinely burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, producing dangerous smog that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as winter air arrives.
Both financial and medical consequences on the roughly thirty-three million people calling home the Delhi area is substantial, according to multiple research.
These hazardous conditions results in elevated rates of nervous system, heart and circulatory and respiratory conditions, and can even lead to malignancies.
The pollution is estimated to be accounting for ten thousand untimely mortalities annually in the city.
